EMC AB has been a distributor of Habasit products for many years. The company’s greatest strength is its team of qualified and competent staff. According to Göran Lidén, site manager in Malmö, their service technicians have become such experts in conveyor belts that Habasit itself has turned to EMC AB for advice and assistance.
Hi there Göran! You’ve been supplying systems and conveyor belts since 1982. How important is your experience to your customers?
I think it’s very important. Extensive experience in a specific industry provides a great deal of knowledge. We’ve worked a lot in the printing industry, for instance, and we’re familiar with this type of machinery. The same applies to conveyor belts. Our skilled service technicians now have extensive experience in the food industry, the pharmaceutical industry, and even in heavier industries. This has given us a very good reputation.
Your vision is to manufacture products that meet or exceed your customers’ expectations. How do Habasit’s products fit in with this?
Habasit’s products are a great fit with this. Almost 90% of the products we have worked with over the years in terms of our manufacturing and which have featured in our applications have been Habasit’s conveyor belts. We’ve earned many customers on the basis of our partnership with Habasit.
In several cases where we started by selling a conveyor belt to a customer, they gradually discovered that they needed regular industrial services too. Our customers are impressed that we can come out to them and change not only conveyor belts but the ball bearings and turning rollers, too. Instead of calling two or three companies, they only have to call the one. The fact that we can assist them with all of this has been our forte over the years.
How do you think the industry has changed over the years?
In terms of the Malmö area and the region, many companies have moved their production abroad. Demand for industrial services is not as strong as it was some years ago. But that’s not to say it’s a dying industry! It’ll be around for many years yet! Preventive maintenance will continue to be important. Even if customers feel the cost to start with, they’ll be reaping the benefits within six months.
You design, manufacture, and install hydraulic and pneumatic systems. What types of components are involved?
Essentially we’re talking about mobile, marine, industrial hydraulics, automated pneumatics, and electronics components, as well as various types of hydraulic power units for heavy industry. These include power units for printing presses, cranes, or equipment that you can find at ports such as hydraulic ramps or jetties.
You also perform repairs. How does that work?
We repair equipment on site with the customer if we can. Often the components are so big that we need to work on site to fix them. But sometimes we’ll take small parts back with us, such as pumps and valves. The components are all very different – they can be as large as trucks or as small as handbags!
Can you give an example of a particularly demanding application or special solution?
That’s difficult. There’s rarely a standard solution. Our solutions differ from application to application. The products are always adapted to both the application and the customer’s wishes. A power unit will be adapted to the machinery it will run, and as a supplier and repairer, we have to know everything about the forces and flows involved. Every product we manufacture is, in principle, tailor-made.
You also operate the retail chain ParkerStore. What products can you find there?
The shops sell industrial supplies – everything from conveyor belts to oil, valves, and hydraulic pumps. Habasit is one of the world’s biggest suppliers of conveyor belts, and Parker is a world leader in hydraulics and pneumatics. We offer our customers a very wide range.
You provide solutions to companies in a variety of industries. In what way do your customers’ needs differ?
We supply solutions to the food industry, the pharmaceutical industry, the timber industry, the metal industry, the transport industry, and to shipping companies. The need for products is roughly the same, but the way the customers want the products delivered can differ. Purchases are usually more planned in the manufacturing industry, with a slower pace as a result. Bakeries and printers often have more urgency. If something goes down, the customer can’t wait until tomorrow. So it’s important that we respond and are on site quickly.
How do you think your partnership with Habasit works?
Our partnership works great and always has done. EMC is very knowledgeable about Habasit’s products. Our service technicians have worked closely with Habasit for many years and have extensive experience of conveyor belts. After all these years with Habasit, we’ve learned a lot. You learn a lot from being out there on the ground in the various industries. This means that we’ve accumulated a lot of knowledge and are able to work quite independently. But if we do need support or assistance from Habasit, we get it. Habasit has even asked us for advice, and they were able to rely on us when they needed assistance! That’s really fun.
